[Jan. 27th, 2007|12:33 am] |
Luckily, upon arriving Maarten, Vicki's friend, was there to meet us. He helped us get a train ticket and we rode to grand central. We found our hostel and I was so bloody tired I just passed out as soon as we got upstairs. Everyone else decided to go out for a bit. Now, I suppose it's ok to tell this story now that we're all back home safe. Shortly after everyone else left I woke up to hear someone mumbling in a strange voice in one of the other beds. It sounded like he was just having a subdued conversation so I went back to sleep. A little later I woke up and he was getting louder. By this point is was becoming clear that he was likely on a great deal of psychotropic drugs and having emotional trouble. Then he began to beat his head against the wall, literally, and was talking about hitting people in the head with an iron stick and jumping in the canal and all sorts of "having a really bad trip" talk. I looked around to see the only other people in the room were four english girls who appeared to be leaving. I quickly dressed and followed them, not wanting to be left alone with mr. let's eat a pound of mushrooms. On the way down the stairs I asked if they were going to complain and they said yes. We told a large man behind the bar the situation and he went up and calmly told the guy to get the hell out. Still ranting and raving, he left without incident and from there on our stay was awesome. I went back to sleep and later everyone came back and took a nap as well. Later, Risa's friend Enda and his friend Robbie came over and took us out. we ate dinner at an asian south american fusion place and then went to a pub and drank. Then they took us through the red light district. Damn. After that it was bedtime. The next day we got up early and Maarten met us at the hostel. We went to the sex museum. A whole museum dedicated to sex. All kinds of sex. Woooo. Then a more traditional sort of museum, the Van Gogh museum. It took us a while to get through the whole thing. I saw a few things I liked but my feet were pretty sore by the end. Then we went to Coco's, the bar where Enda and Robbie work. I ate a kangaroo burger. Then it was bedtime. Next day we went to the Anne Frank house. They have video of interviews with some of the people involved in the story and they preserved pieces of the wall in Anne's room and you can walk through the secret door and the annex. Then we went shopping. By we, I mean the girls because the street we went shopping on was 90% shoe and clothing stores. We ended the night at a bar called the bulldog where I had a few drinks and then a glass of absinthe. Then I attempted some philosophy. Bedtime again and the next morning we had to check out. We said Goodbye to Maarten who stayed with us in the hostel because he lived a good way away from us. Then we went to Coco's to leave our luggage which Enda graciously let us do. Then it was some exploring and back to Coco's where we lounged in the VIP room and some of us indulged in activities of a perfectly legal nature. Soon we had to say goodbye to Amsterdam as we caught our flight back to spain. Amsterdam was the best and I wanna go back. I feel Like I'm leaving something out here but perhaps Risa will fill it in if she posts about it. Anyway, more pictures are up and I'll finish off the trip in my next installment "Bye bye Amsterdam, Bye Bye Spain, We miss you Cassandra!"

| The train to Segovia |
[Jan. 16th, 2007|06:46 pm] |
So we woke up a little later than planned that day and left Cassandra's apartment a little later as well. When we got to the station we had missed the early train and had to wait about an hour on the platform for the next train out. The train comes and it's not crowded at all. We finally start heading out of the city. On the way out we see two buildings that are somewhat famous. They're built at an angle. These two skyscrapers, they're kind of leaning toward each other. Imagine each story in a skyscraper shifted over by five or ten feet so the top floor of each building is just hanging over the square between the two buildings. That was neat. Then we moved out of the city and started to see the Spanish countryside. We managed to get lots of pictures out the window but many of mine had reflections or were blurry. Still, some of them came out alright. Eventually we came up into the mountains and we could see above the cloud cover where the clouds met the land. Two hours after leaving we arrived in Segovia. We had lunch and set off for the aqueduct. That thing was a sight. My batteries died so I have no pictures but everyone else took plenty. The romans built it to bring water into Segovia and they did it with no cement. The whole thing stands free. Just big stones cut to fit and stacked on top of each other. Pretty neat. Then we continued to walk around Segovia and take pictures of the sights. I got some fresh batteries and we made our way to the castle. The view from the courtyard was stunning and the moat around the castle was amazingly deep. We bought tickets for the castle and wandered around. The ceilings in the castle were the most interesting thing. They were detailed with ornate gilded carvings and vibrant colors. The sun was beginning to go down so we went up to the tower and got plenty of pictures of each other and the view. We wanted to take an early train back because we had to get up at four to catch our flight to Amsterdam but, once again, we missed our train so we found a bar and hung out for a bit and caught the next train. We slept some on the way back and figured after everyone got everything together from Cassandras apartment we could all grab a few hours sleep at the hotel. As it turns out, we just decided to stay up the whole night. We packed and watched Nip/Tuck. Vicky got some sleep and at four we caught a couple of cabs to Barajas. We ate some McDonalds at five for dinfast. One painfully cramped two hour flight later and all but Risa were in Amsterdam!
Stay tuned for our next installment - "Amsterdam!"

| Hello internet. Did you miss me? |
[Jan. 12th, 2007|08:05 pm] |
Approximately thirteen days ago we were in the airport bar in RDU waiting for our flight to arrive. I was busy drinking and Vicki was having a salad. After a somewhat brief flight we landed in New Jersey. I continued drinking. Then the real trial began. The transatlantic plane was large but the economy class seats were still jammed together like they were made exclusively for kindergartners. Vicki managed to get some sleep. Despite my continued drinking on the plane rest never came to me. Many hours later at about ten A.M. local time we had just left the baggage claim at Barajas. Cassandra was waiting for us, looking radiant as ever, overjoyed to see us. Also there was a Risa, Anthony, Janelle, and Lindsay. We took our things and Cassandra bought us metro tickets. The first stop was back to Cassandras apartment to drop off our bags. I think a lot of Americans evolved large feet after leaving europe because I felt like I couldn't take a step in her building without kicking something. It was nice though and there was a decent view of the surrounding area. After a few minutes relaxing we went out to a street market that's held every sunday. The vendors set up tents and sell their wares on the curb. They had shirts and earrings and DVDs, tobacco accessories, scarves and hats, souvenirs. All kinds of things. Several hours at the market and I'm feeling pretty tired. We finally decide to go back and get our bags and go to the hotel that Vicki, Lindsay and I are staying at. Cassandra checks us in and we all take a shower. Separately unfortunately. Some of us got a bit of a nap and then it was time to send off the old year. We wandered a bit and found ourselves at the edge of an impossibly packed plaza square on the other side of which was said to be an irish pub which was our ultimate destination. We made the unwise decision to try and cut straight through the crowd. Having come to an insurmountable wall we had to push back through the crowd and go around. We finally made it to the pub and despite the advertisement of an all night public party there was in fact a private party being held there. The person at the door recognized Cassandra however and we were allowed to go to the back and chill. We had drinks and eventually the private party began to wind up. Now the time was drawing near. Everyone got another drink and we made ready for the countdown. Five, four, three, two , one, Happy New Year! and we all toasted and drank and then someone bought a can of peeled grapes and we each ate one because apparently that's what tradition dictates. After that the bar turned into some kind of obnoxious disgusting discotheque so we got out of there. More terrifying crowd action trying to get to a metro station that turned out to be closed. Janelles back was hurting bad and then I had a bit of a panic attack. I really hate big obnoxious crowds. We all found a clearing and decided to wait for awhile. Someone bought a few bottles of champagne earlier from a street vendor and it was almost one o'clock, our appointed simultaneous around the world drinking time. So we cracked open the bottles and toasted Eight Twenty Eight. After we finished the champagne the crowd had dispersed a bit and we made our way to another metro station and went back home. Vicki, Lindsay and I went on to the hotel and everyone else went to Cassandras apartment. Aside from the crowds and being ridiculously tired it was an awesome new years. Seeing Cassandra again made me so happy. The next day despite being out late and being so tired, we were planning on waking up early so we could make the most of our time there. We woke up at four in the afternoon. I suppose being well rested makes things more enjoyable. We went to Cassandras apartment and hung out there for a bit and then went to the plaza de toros where they have the bull fights. It was dark when we got there and the lights were off so we took a few pictures of a big lit up pointy thing in the square and then went to dinner. We ate at a bar called Canas y Tapas. I think it's a chain restaurant. We had calamari and salad and cheese and chorizo and other traditional spanish food. So much food. I think that's about all we did that day. We went back home to go to bed because there were big plans for the next day. That concludes the first installment 'The first two days'. Stay tuned for the next episode 'The train to Segovia'.

| | MST3K Love Theme | ] | Well, this week hasn't been out of the ordinary. There's this diminishing radius type curve on the way home that keeps trying to kill me. I've finally got some stuff to do at work. I'm roughing in the test system for our robots high pressure manifold. Mostly I've been looking at houses. I've found about twenty properties in the greater northwestern Raleigh area and I'ma start visiting each one this week perhaps. Just kinda' driving by, you know. Also I think I'ma find a buyers broker to handle all the bureaucratic nonsense. I went out to eat with Vicki on Friday and had an awesome burger. Then we went to see Borat and I almost died. I couldn't stop laughing during the nude fight / chase scene. I slept most of the day saturday and then went to Wal-Mart with Vicki. I was still really tired that night even though I slept all day. Weird. So that's about it. I guess this week has been pretty awesome. I'm looking forward to watching Nip-Tuck on Tuesday with Risa and Vicki and my refrigerator is making funny noises. Goodnight everybody! |

The new route I take to get home goes by the north end of the main runway of RDU. Every once and again I get to see a big ol' airplane take off right over my car as I drive by. Not today though. Friday I ate pizza at Lillys with Vicki. Then we went to see 'Man of the year' and I drank a bunch of beer in the theater. That movie was not at all what I expected. It was good though. Then we went to my apartment and hung out. I slept late the next day and watched a 'Flip this house' marathon and now I'm all wound up about buying a house. So then I got dressed up in my costume

and went to see 'Greg Klaibers grabass revue' at the reservoir in Carrboro. Punk rock polka music is awesome. I went home Sunday to have lunch with my parents and uncle and to do some laundry. Then, on the way home, I stopped at Southpoint and bought MST3K volume 8. I wanted the one with 'The crawling eye' but I don't think it's been released yet. So that's my weekend. I'ma go watch naked ladies do stuff to each other on the internet and then get a shower. |

This weekend was the best thing ever. Dinner at Caribbean Breeze or something like that, where Kevin shows up with Caitlin and a little later Brandon shows up too. Also Sarah and Risa and Vicki and Risa's friend and Joe. Then, Karaoke. I drive everyone around in the tank and we go to Playmakers, Where Gerty and Rob show up, and then Aura which are both made enjoyable by nothing more than the presence of my friends. Kevin told me what a 'busted girl' is and we see many in Aura including one who fell on the dance floor and one who begged Kevin to take her back to his 'hotel room'. (He mentioned to her that he was from out of town) We get back to Joe's house and continue to party. There's a bonfire in the backyard and Brandon, Vicki, Caitlin, and I discuss philosophy and metaphysics until about six in the morning. Damn. I've got to get down there to see him again soon. That guy is awesome. The next day Risa, Vicki, and I drive to Greensboro where we meet Joe at Caitlin's place and Kevin is there. We go straight to NYP where I eat an assload of pizza and beer. Excellent tunes are played all night and Grady comes over when he gets off work. Then we all head to M'Couls for one last round. I hope Kev' told Caitlin he didn't really pee off the balcony. Well, when I get back to Caitlin's house I just pass right out being very tired. Vicki and Grady apparently talked until six in the morning though. I figured they would like each other, especially where their opinions on art are concerned. I'm gonna plan many trips to GSO while I'm here I think. So now, it's back to work and such. I've still got to find a house, figure out where I want to live, draw more, learn more java etc. I'll be more productive tomorrow. |

| | Coheed and Cambria - The Suffering | ] | So first, my boss told me on friday that my status is gonna be upgraded from intern to contract-permanent soon and that comes with "Increased compensation", which I suppose could mean a raise or benefits or both. Yay me. I still haven't seriously started looking for a house yet. I need to figure out what neighborhood I want to live in. I wish there was a service that could provide overlays for Google maps that show incidents of violent crime, property values, future government appropriation sites, and other such things, like in sim city or something. If there is, I haven't found it which means I'm gonna be spending a lot of time at the public records hall before I buy a house. I haven't really started on that program I was talking about. Adobe wants $600.00 for their Flash suite so I said nuts to that action and started teaching myself Java. Last night I went out with Gerty and some of her friends to see Risa at the bar where she was working the door. Josh and Don came up too. The bar was alright, not too pricey. The music was the most obnoxious crap to issue forth from a speaker but apparently eighty's night is much better. I kinda felt bad because we didn't really get to spend much time with Risa since she didn't get a break or anything. Also I was really tired and went home around 12:30. While I was there one of Gerty's friends wanted me to pretend to flirt with her when her ex showed up. I thought I had stumbled into a sit com. Like, I expected the 'Friends' theme to start playing in the background. I left before that happened but I'm sure she worked it out. Things to do: learn more java, finish the sentry gun project, draw a picture of the Austin Heller house, start compiling crime and property value statistics and look for a damn house, get lit, not necessarily in that order.
Things are more like they are now than they have ever been before. |

| | Weird Al | ] | Well, this weekend was fun. I went to Boone and saw Pat and Rob and Catherine and even Brendan for a few minutes. Me and Risa went to the homecoming game and it was fun. My thesis is finally in the last stage of getting published and I should be officially graduated by the end of this semester. Hanging out at app south was great. We played on the internets and I got eaten by Burton's fleas. Then I went home and spent a day with my parents which was nice. Now I'm back in Raleigh and I just got off work. I got my first paycheck last week so I decided to stop by Best Buy and get some toys. I bought a Harry Potter movie and the new Weird Al album. It can be difficult to keep from going crazy and buying a bunch of stuff you had no intention of buying before you came in at a place like that. Did you know Weird Al had a TV series? Also I saw a Mitch Hedburg CD that looked appealing. Now I think I'ma try and buy the flash suite online 'cause I have an idea for a program I wanna write and if I don't get bored or frustrated or drunk you might get to see it sometime. Till next time... |

I, myself am planning on picking up a pack of Djarum black and a bottle of Mark for that extra special feeling this weekend. Vicki's party is this weekend too and she's planning to teach her roommates to drink good and proper like. I'm also gonna hang out with Greg and Kathy again this weekend. My job is so super awesome that I think I'm gonna drop my last class. Compared to what I get to do at work, school is kinda dull. I'll probably sign up for another class in the spring but right now I'd rather be building stuff. Also I think I'm getting used to the drive, or my brain is atrophied. I've finished the last Harry Potter book and I just can't wait till next July for the conclusion. Seriously, how can you end a book like that and then say 'Yeah I'll have a conclusion for that in a couple of years.' I think I'm gonna start looking at houses next week. Greg showed me the recording studio he's building in his garage and now I can't wait to have a house of my own to build stuff in and hang sheetrock and paint and such. It's gonna be the spot. Joe invited me to a mongolian restaurant with Risa and Sarah last night and it was pretty sweet. Well, that's about all that's been going on lately. I'm gonna cook a spaghetti squash. |

I'm not sure which classes I want to take 'cause I think I might switch some of my current ones. My first day of work was today and it was a little bit of awesome. My contract is for four months but I might get a more permanent offer later. I still need to figure out how to deal with traffic though. I got lost on the way home and missed my class today. I'm reading 'Harry Potter' number five and 'Atlas Shrugged' now and hopefully my textbooks will arrive at Vicki's soon. I hate mornings and I'm really sleepy so I'ma go bed. Oh, and Risa, It does hurt bad but I say it is worth it. |

| | none | ] | Well, lessee here, I've just had a beer and fixed dinner right in the middle of one of my classes. Let's hear it for distance learning! I'm sure I've got that job I wanted. The guy called me up today and said that the HR guys couldn't give me a permanent career position but I could take a sort of internship - like spot. No benefits, but I am getting the lower end of my requested salary and experience and possibly a permanent position later on so whoopee. I get to start at the ass crack of dawn on Tuesday. I've been reading a lot more lately. I've just finished 'The Fountainhead' and I've started 'Anthem'. The way the main character talks in Anthem reminds me of Golem in Lord of the Rings - no singular pronouns, just 'we' and 'us'. It's kind of funny. Also I've been reading the 'Harry Potter' series 'cause I started reading a copy at Brendans parents house the morning after the fishing trip and I'm addicted to it now. 8/28 was awesome if anyone hasn't read Vicki's LJ. We went to an irish pub and had some food and then went to a place called flying saucers or something similar. They've got about 200 different beers and if you join their club and drink one of each they give you a saucer with your name and a quote on it to place on the wall. I'ma have to try and get one up there. Well, I suppose that's about all for now though if anyone wants to do anything in Raleigh on Friday I'm down. |

He asked me if I had any questions about the company and I didn't. I wanted to say that I didn't really care. I wanted to say that the only thing that matters to me is what they'll let me do and create and the money they'll pay me for it but that probably wouldn't have helped me and it doesn't matter much anyway. | | groggy | ] | Well, Friday night I went out with Gerty and some of her friends. Josh and Don were there and some girl named Kristen I think, whose birthday it was. We had drinks and then watched a movie called 'Men with brooms'. It was a comedy about curling, that weird canadian sport, with Leslie Nielsen. Then Saturday night was Greg's first show with his new band. The night starts of with a filipino Elvis impersonator. Complete with rhinestone adorned white suit and cape, this guy was awesome. I can't quite describe what it was like seeing a middle aged filipino man in that getup singing 'In the ghetto'. Then it was Greg's turn. A better fusion of punk and polka I have never seen and the unwashed leiderhosen was the icing on the cake. Finish the night of with another Elvis. This one actually played guitar but I'm certain he was schizophrenic and channeling some combination of Robin Williams, Andy Kaufman, and Wesley Willis. The novelty wore off about a half hour before his set ended. Chapel Hill is as I remember it mostly. It was definitely a good time. |

| | Night Ranger - Sister Christian | ] | Strange, emotional, visceral dreams last night which are quickly fading into nothingness. I can barely remember what exactly happened but I know it involved several people close to me lately and I was very emotional and a bit psychotic. I wish we could record dreams on a vcr and play them back the next day. It's for the best I'm sure. Perhaps dreams are a way of flushing away all the unspent nonsense from the previous day without having to have a breakdown dealing with it consciously. The subconscious says, brutally, 'you dont need this bullshit so we're dumping it' and you can't argue 'cause you're asleep. Well, feeling better now. Time to get a job. |
